Α live performance with voice & audiovisual installation which can be performed either as an outdoor or an indoor installation.

How to Make a Dadaist Poem

To make a Dadaist poem:

• Take a newspaper.

• Take a pair of scissors.

• Choose an article as long as you are planning to make your poem.

• Cut out the article.

• Then cut out each of the words that make up this article and put them in a bag.

• Shake it gently.

• Then take out the scraps one after the other in the order in which they left the bag.

• Copy conscientiously.

• The poem will be like you.

• And here are you a writer, infinitely original and endowed with a sensibility that is charming though beyond the understanding of the vulgar.

Tristan Tzara

Inspired by dadaism and following Tristan Tzara’s instructions on how to create a Dadaist poem, we create a performance which experiments with multidimensional space as opposed to sound, visual arts and internet.

Our text material is a collection provide by philosophical, astrophysical, architectural texts as well as fairy-tails, which enters out data base where they will be combined and lose their original use, translated randomly to provide us with a dadaist poem.

Words are fed once more randomly to the internet and provides us with random images. The words are fed to the sound data and create a new soundscape. The words and images are interpreted by the vocalist, words loose their meaning and images loose their visuality providing us with new forms of sounds which are added to the soundscape. The same images are fed to the visual artists which together with the capture of the space of the performance will create a new form of visual space.

The group of the performers are spread in Europe and America. Three of them are in Polytechnon in Corfu/Greece, and two in ROD in California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) Los Angeles/USA. The texts are provided by the vocalist from LA, words and images are generated in a dadaist poem in Corfu, are transmitted to LA, interpreted by the voice artist and are transmitted back to Corfu where the sound and visual artists will combine the elements to produce the final result.

Thus, a new space is created that will be shaped by the connotations that have been already created inside the artists’ memory, the different spaces of performance, the space of internet by interacting all of them with the means of sound, image and site specific elements. This unknown space will provide the base for practicing dada’s aesthetic of mockery on the tight correlation between words and meaning in order to create to the audience the feeling of losing the borders of space as it now is.

Short bio:

Anna Pangalou is a voice artist which experiments through the boundaries of classical vocal practices and the new forms created by experimental sound practices. She specialises in lieder and contemporary music and has a special interest for works of voice and electronics which she performs as a part of the group Balsamsaft, that she has formed with composer A.Deniozos. Her collaborations with artists from different trajectories (dance, fine arts, visuals, theatre) aim to the creation of new experimental forms of expression. She has currently started experimenting with music installations and sound sculptures. She has been granted with the Dimitris Mitropoulos price for singers (2003). Her vocal quest has made her lived in Vienna, Rome, Florence as an Onassis scholar and currently as an invited artist/Fulbright scholar and Faculty member of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in LA.

Theodoros Lotis studied the guitar, flute, music analysis and composition in Greece, Belgium and the UK, and Sciences of Art and Plastic Arts at the U. of Ioannina. His music has been performed at festivals and conferences in Europe, Australia, America and Asia, and has received a number of awards and distinctions at Bourges (France, 2000), Sculpted Sound Composers Competition (UK, 2000), Metamorphoses (Belgium, 2000, 02), Luigi Russolo (Italy, 2000, 02), CIMESP (Brasil, 2001) and and Jeu de temps / Times Play (UK/Canada, 2002).
He was awarded the first prize at the Concours International de Spatialisation pour l’Interprétation des Ouevres Acousmatiques by Musiques et Recherches, in Brussels. He has done commissioned work for Musiques et Recherches (Belgium, 1997, 2000, 2014), Sculpted Sound Composers Competition (UK, 2000), Amici della Musica di Cagliari (Italy, 2001), the festival Visiones Sonoras (Mexico, 2007) and the clarinetist Esther Lamneck (as invited composer at the New York University in 2012).
Theodoros Lotis has been teaching electroacoustic composition and analysis at Goldsmiths College - University of London, the Technological and Educational Institute of Crete, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and Universities in Europe and America as invited composer. He is Assistant Professor at the Ionian University, Corfu, Greece. He is founding member of the Hellenic Electroacoustic Music Composers Association (HELMCA) and the Hellenic Society for Acoustic Ecology. Sofy Papadopoulou followed studies in Digital arts, Printmaking, painting and performance in Athens School of Fine Arts and University of Barcelona-Faculty of Fine Arts, Spain. She has participated in audiovisual festivals/videoart, theater/live visual installations, live visual installations/vjing and net projects. In 2002 she formed COM.ODD.OR visual enhancement group. COM.ODD.OR focuses on multimedia installations, live visual performances, interactive multimedia and digital arts.

Dionisis Sidirokastritis was born in Athens and studied Economics (Bachelor) in the Faculty of Economics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Music (Saxophone and Theory of Music) in the Central Conservatory of Athens and Digital Arts (Master’s Degree) in Athens’ School of Fine Arts.
Since 2012 he is a member of COM.ODD.OR.

Panos Pandis is a programmer actively involved with HCI and multimedia. He is a fan of open source software and Hardware and especially open source programming languages for interaction and multimedia such as Processing and OpenFrameworks. Recently he has began exploring the vast field of electronic sound synthesis using Supercollider and PureData.

Constantine Nissidis, born in Athens in 1982, graduated from the department of Visual Arts in ASFA (Athens School of Fine Arts). He moves to Paris in 2009, where he participates in the Erasmus Program in Guillaume Paris (atelier de base) studio and Patrice Alexandre (atelier de technicite) at ENSBA (Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts).
Since 2011 he has been dealing with implementing new technologies and new medias in the field of visual/fine arts

Martin Velez is a trilingual musician, creative technologist, sound engineer and digital artist. Interested in the exploration of new technologies for audio production, live performances, and audio/visual interactive experiences. He enjoys making lots of different noises (even music), building interfaces for expressive user interaction and musical performance, multimodal sensor systems and sound installations. His current research involves the development and use of biofeedback devices to generate music and is embedded in his thesis "Apparatus for exploring the intersection of scientific and artistic views of reality”.
