May 24 - 27, 2012, Corfu

For the last fifteen years, the Audiovisual Arts Festival (AVfest) is held by the Department of Audio & Visual Arts, in collaboration with the ERHMEE Lab - Department of Music Studies, of the Ionian University, in Corfu, Greece. Each year the Audiovisual Arts Festival features a series of artistic and scientific activities, presenting the results of the creative, educational and research work developed by its organizing institution in the fields of contemporary sonic and visual arts.

The Festival’s influence has gradually expanded aiming to provide an ideal meeting point for artists and researchers through media art events, workshops and academic conferences.

The 6th Audiovisual Arts Festival was organised by the Dept. Audio & Visual Arts in collaboration with the EPHMEE Lab-Dept. Music Studies of the Ionian University in May 2012. That year’s festival focused on the thematic ‘Art in the City’ through a variety of artistic, educational and scientific actions that took place throughout the old city of Corfu. The results of the scientific and research activity of the two Departments in the fields of contemporary sonic and visual arts modern arts of video and sound were presented while critically approaching topics regarding the incorporation of state of the art audiovisual technologies in the creative artistic process.

AKOYSMATA is the annual series of events presented by the Laboratory of Electroacoustic Music Research and Applications (ΕΡΗΜΕΕ) in collaboration with the Laboratory of Performance Environments in the Arts (PEARL) at the Festival of Audiovisual Arts organized by the Department of AudioVisual Arts of the Ionian University. The program includes music by the Italian professor Lelio Camilleri and works by students of Florence Music Conservatory L. Cherubini.

The lecture examines the main science fiction films from the 1930s onward in which sound plays a fundamental role; from the use of wind sounds to symbolize the arrival of a comet in La Fin du Monde (1931), to the hierarchical and complex sound world of the Star Wars saga (1977-2005); from the electronic music of Forbidden Planet (1956) to the music built on sound in Arrival (2016).

"The Fellowship of Artists” returns... this time with a solo exhibition encountering a group exhibition. Each art form a different form of expression, conversing and interacting under the sound of images, under the silence of words.
