"Diakonaroudia" is a short documentary dedicated to roadside shrines — a “silent” form of folk expression that, in the end, few seem to truly know. This authentic form of expression is manifested through an impressive variety of shapes, materials, inventions, and uses. The documentary seeks to highlight the diversity of this — relatively recent — tradition, which does not conform to strict forms or institutional rules, even though the diakonaroudi always functions as a vessel of memory. Filmed along provincial roads in Epirus, the documentary focuses on the contrast between the gaze of the observer and that of the passerby — on the “coexistence” of the local's point of view with that of the outsider — recording, preserving, and safeguarding a local term and the cultural significance carried by the object.
