Eleni Kolliopoulou

The proposal concerns the mixed media performance "Homemade Mandarinade", a contemporary ritual for a limited number of participants (up to 30 people). The small scale is thought to preserve the ritualistic nature of the live action and to encourage the emergence of an ephemeral community. According to Victor Turner, rituals are an essential part of stabilizing everyday life and introduce the viewer to a state that transcends their daily perception, touching the limits of liminality. "Homemade Mandarinade" aims to activate this unique connection with oneself and the group through a participatory and relational aesthetic (Relational Aesthetics). The performance will include a video screening and live action performed by Eleni Kolliopoulou. This work is the continuation of previous work of  Eleni which has been presented at the BIFPA Festival at the Belfast School of Art, Northern Ireland, titled "Handle with care": http://www.elenivisualart.eu/poetics-politics-of-everyday-life/handle-with-care-2020/.

The performance concerns cooking as a lived experience and means of connection within a group/community. "Homemade Mandarinade" invites us to wander through complex conceptual networks of thought, such as Necropolitics (Achille Mbembe), questions concerning freedom of expression, interspersed with poetic excerpts celebrating peace, while also bringing forth our ties with basic vital needs, such as food, sharing, and silence. The audience will be part of the performance space and will have the opportunity to participate in the action at specific moments. The action will last approximately 30 minutes.
