The subject of my documentary came from my grandmother's stories, which I had been listening to since I was a little girl. She often talked about her aunt, Kalliopi Pontikou, whom she had taken care of in her old age.The story that captured my interest the most was about Kalliopi’s son, Nikola Pontikos—a young man who was lost in Grammos during the Greek Civil War in 1949, fighting as a guerrilla. My grandmother still carefully keeps an old suitcase of his, which contains Nikola’s personal belongings that offer a glimpse into his character and life. His mother used to keep the suitcase at her home in Oinousses, and in order to preserve it, my grandmother brought it to her home in Athens. My aim was to use these five minutes not only to honor the memory of a young man lost too soon, but also to portray the character of his mother, of my grandmother, and the broader social context of that era.
