Prince Yamato lived in Yamato Dynasty period (250-710 A.D) and he was the son of Keiko emperor. The story we can find it written in the books of Kojiki (written in 712) and Nihon Shoki (that was written in 720). Yamato was a real person, and his name became a legend for his adventures. At the end the prince became the one, who unified the nation of Japan as one. Yamato Takeru, became a hero, and his legend and myths became part of Japan's history. Until today, he is worshiped as a divine figure, although his accomplishments have never been seen by anyone. So, we don't know if what has been written is the truth or not. We don't even know if the actual person was as the scripts describe him, or he was a totally different person. Maybe the nation loved th myth more than the real prince. The purpose of the movie is to show a different version of the myth. Yamato Take not as the great hero, but as a normal person with weakneses and faults.
