TONIGHT... WE IMPROVISE
BY LUIGI PIRANDELLO
An amateur theatre company struggling to put on a production of Pirandello's "Leonora, addio!" finds its members constantly at odds with each other, while at the same time having to follow the instructions of an authoritarian director who presents their play as nothing less than a gift from God. The cast stages an unfinished performance and ends up resorting to spontaneous improvisation to cover up the repeated mistakes that occur during the performance. The actors clash with each other, "breaking" their roles as ego overcomes the need for art, dismantling the director's well-planned performance.
Pirandello's play succeeds in commenting directly on life and its existence within art and theatre through innovative techniques and varied twists. At the same time, the audience is put to the test along with the actors, as both constantly struggle to understand the value of art's existence in life. In this way, art, reality and theatre, in their simplest forms, constantly collide, highlighting the importance of their existence in our lives.
