I’m proposing an artwork precentation of the piece Birdsong (2019) for the 2025 conference "Taboo - Transgression - Transcendence in Art & Science”. It is part of my ongoing artistic research on language, translations, sound, mimicry, empathy and interspecies communication.
In the piece Birdsong my aim is to bring the languages of people and birds closer to each other by creating an alphabet for birdsong. For the piece I have studied sound visualization through spectrograms. Spectrograms are visual representations of sound. While studying bird vocalization I found that the whistle tones in the spectrograms look visually similar to letters or alphabets. That is one of the links I’ve tried to make in order to bring the human and nonhuman languages closer to each other. I try to see their connections and similarities in order to dismantle the structures and hierarchies in the language. I’m also interested in different kinds of translations between image, sound and text and what knowledge can be gained and lost in the translation process.
