Violation/Refusal is an interactive audiovisual installation that explores bodily autonomy, consent, and refusal through a cyberfeminist perspective. The work challenges dominant notions of interactivity as inherently open and positive, instead proposing a system that establishes limits and resists unrestricted access.
The installation uses an ultrasonic distance sensor connected to an Arduino, which detects the viewer’s proximity. This data is translated into a generative visual system simulating a digital skin surface. As the viewer approaches, the image gradually transforms: the surface becomes increasingly distorted, scars appear, and repeated warning messages (“VIOLATION”) emerge. Once a critical threshold is crossed, the system fully withdraws, turning the screen black while maintaining the text as a sign of refusal.
At the core of the work is the concept of refusal as an active form of agency. Interactivity is not framed as a reward for participation, but as a space where power, boundaries, and responsibility are negotiated. The installation also incorporates memory through the persistence of visual scars, suggesting that each interaction leaves traces that cannot be erased.
Violation/Refusal redefines the relationship between viewer and artwork, shifting the focus from engagement to accountability. It proposes a form of digital body that is not passive or endlessly accessible, but capable of asserting boundaries, responding to intrusion, and ultimately refusing interaction—highlighting the importance of consent within contemporary digital culture.
