Christina Dimitriadis

The festival’s main exhibition, organized by the Department of Audio & Visual Arts in collaboration with the ERHMEE Laboratory of the Department of Music Studies at the Ionian University, presents the work of distinguished artist and photographer Christina Dimitriadis at the Municipal Gallery of Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands.

The exhibition brings together works from three photographic series: Island Hoping (2015–2018), Horizon Wanderers (2021–2023), and J’ai perdu mon Eurydice (2021–2025). A unifying thread across these bodies of work is the artist’s focus on the temporalities of matter, relating both to the deep geological time of the earth and to human activity. Dimitriadis creates “portraits of matter” by photographing rocky islets, quarries, and constructed ships.

In Island Hoping, barren yet geopolitically significant rocky islands of the Aegean dominate the images as resilient geological formations. In Horizon Wanderers, ships—before and after their construction and use—function as symbols of exploration as well as of human dominance over nature. In J’ai perdu mon Eurydice, the depiction of an ancient quarry and an ancient theatre reveals the trajectories of marble, linking materiality with cultural memory and the exploitation of natural resources.

Dimitriadis’ work engages with complex social, political, and historical questions, approaching matter as a carrier of memory and transformation. Focusing on extraction landscapes, rocks, and human-made structures, the artist simultaneously documents and creates (counter-)monuments of the relationship between humans and the environment.

The exhibition will be accessible to visitors with visual impairments through recorded audio descriptions.
