The project The Scarcity Market, developed במסגרת του μαθήματος “Internet Art,” is an interactive dystopian web-based artwork that simulates the operation of a global stock exchange. Exploring the limits of consumption on a collapsing planet, the work subverts the promise of digital abundance by introducing the concept of “Algorithmic Scarcity.” Within this platform, carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels function as the central market index, dynamically linked in real time to the prices of essential goods, where environmental data reflects an ongoing economic crisis.
In a world where every digital “click” generates emissions and nature is being depleted at an irreversible pace, what is the true value of capital when nothing remains left to be bought?
The technologies used for the development of the project include:
HTML: for structuring the interface of the virtual marketplace
CSS: for designing the stock-market aesthetic and visual effects that emphasize market instability
JavaScript: acting as the “market algorithm,” continuously increasing CO₂ levels, adjusting resource prices, and generating interactive messages
