The work titled *“Free Will?”* explores the concept of free will. Black eyes spread across the paper create in the viewer the unsettling sensation of being watched. The variation and repetition of the eyes exert pressure, prompting the viewer to question: does free will truly exist? Are our decisions genuinely our own?
The charcoal is applied using a gestural drawing technique, emphasizing spontaneity and action. The eyes are not rendered realistically, but rather abstractly—through lines that function more as symbols than representations. The large scale of the work also plays a crucial role in how it is experienced, intensifying the feeling of surveillance.
This is a piece that acquires meaning through the presence of the viewer, who does not merely observe it but becomes part of it. It evokes the sensation that all these gazes are directed at the viewer—gazes behind which there are people, people who make decisions on our behalf.
The work is inspired by the practice of the Greek artist Giorgos Xenos.
