The work 1920 serves as a sound composition accompanying the painting by visual artist Artemis Arvaniti. According to the artist, it refers to the 1920s, a period during which women’s emancipation began to become more visible, while at the same time social forms of control and inequality continued to exist. The image of entertainment depicted in the painting functions as a symbol of freedom, but also as a showcase of social contrasts. The historical experience of that era connects with the present day and highlights the ongoing need for collective struggles by women. The aim of the sound composition was to translate these meanings into an auditory form, creating a sonic environment that interacts with the image. Through different layers of sound, it attempts to convey both the atmosphere of entertainment and the underlying tension hidden beneath it. The painting resembles a journey through an imaginary city and an inner psychological world. Music can function as: “a wandering from dream to the city and then into a surreal carnival.”
