Marianne Strapatsakis, painter and video artist, is participating in two major art events in France and in England.

Experimenting with video since the 1980's, she was one of the first artists in Greece to use video image in ways tangling with artistic concerns; an endeavour initially originating in the field of painting, when she started experimenting with reflective surfaces. Video camera thus became for her a new, reflective surface, the beginning of an intensive relation concerning the elements reforming the image. The poetic, almost lyrical approach to existential issues of the human, expressed through technological means, became the basis for her installations. The consciousness of image and sound is an important element of her work. In her installations, painting, sculpture and video communicate though an immediate dialectic way.

Marianne Strapatsakis is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Audio and Visual Arts of the Ionian University.

Press release of the participations

In Marseilles, Cultural Capital 2013, she is invited to represent Greece in the dedication for the “50 years of Video Art”, organised by the 26th Festival "Les instants video-numériques et poétiques”(www.instantsvideo.com). She is participating with the 3-channel video installation “Invisible Places – The Vast White”, the last part of the trilogy “Birth-Life-Death”.

In England (Edinburgh, Jarrow, Cambridge) she is participating in the exhibition “Myths, memories and mysteries: how artists respond to the past” curated by Roger Wollen. There will be presented three paintings made on stainless steel – a material she uses since 1984 and that led to her engagement with video art – and a 7' video art tape, both inspired by the Byzantine Art.

The exhibition will be presented as follows:

7 November 2013 - 31 January 2014, at the “The Scottish Historic Building Trust”, Edinburgh

17 March 2014 – 17 June 2014, at the “Bede’s World Museum”, Church Bank, Jarrow

1 July 2014 – 23 October 2014, at the “Museum of Classical Archaeology”, Cambridge
