Course Description
This course explores the role and function of music as both diegetic and non-diegetic soundscape across a range of performance genres, including:
- Ancient Greek drama
- Popular theatre: Karagiozis (shadow theatre)
- Cinema: European, American, and ethnic traditions
- Dance: ballet and dance-theatre
Students will be introduced to core theoretical principles of visual and auditory culture, focusing on music as both a structural and aesthetic component within the broader field of audio-visual culture. In the performing arts (theatre, dance, dance-drama), music is examined in relation to its cultural framework and socio-historical context, highlighting its role as a medium that reflects social structures and cultural practices. In cinema, music is considered as an auditory art form that interacts with visual stimuli (image, graphics, visual effects) and other sound effects.
The course draws on interpretive tools from (Ethno)Musicology, the Sociology of Music, and Digital Arts. All lectures are supported by authoritative international and Greek bibliography and are complemented by audio-visual material (PowerPoint presentations, DVDs, CDs).
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand the different roles of music depending on the type of performance, and its contribution to the final audio-visual effect.
- Demonstrate an overview of the use of music across the performing arts: theatre (ancient drama, shadow theatre), dance (ballet, dance-theatre), and cinema (European/American).
- Analyze the relationship between music and society, with music as a medium reflecting social structures and ideological beliefs.
- Develop a holistic, interdisciplinary understanding of the interplay of music as an art form within other arts.
