PhD research topic:

The thesis aspires to shed light on the issue of pain and its management within contemporary social contexts and specifically to identify its manifestations and social impact, as identified and recorded in social media. The aim is to record and outline the emerging new form of mourning and its manifestations as it emerges through its public expression, the electronic funeral obituary that accompany the death ritual as well as the mourning form as the central exponent of pain. The above will concern us as central issues. This thesis aspires to highlight the relationship that develops with social media, their interaction and how this relationship is driven through various processes in the real world.


Angeliki Lyginou was born and raised in Korintho, since 2005 she lives and works in Rethymno. She studied Sociology at the School of Social Sciences of the University of Crete. She completed the Master's Program Culture, Education and Human Development of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Crete following the direction of Social Anthropology. She has carried out field research in areas of Crete collecting interviews and life stories. She has been a member of the Research and Studies Center at the University of Crete KEME in the Optical Anthropology laboratory. She has participated in conferences and seminars as a speaker. Her research interests relate to death rituals, ritual mourning, pain and bereavement management, and the transformations they take in contemporary societies through social media.
