STANDARD DEVIATION
AIL - ANGEWANDTE INTERDISCIPLINARY LAB
This exhibition invites artistic research projects that flip the impulse in research to avoid anomalies, and rather aim to emphasize fluctuations, risks, surprises, and irregularities. Statistically, the standard deviation describes how far out observations in a set of data are spread. It describes the visual shape of the distribution of a data set, its variance, and how far its parts deviate from the standard. As a step beyond the analysis of the average, standard deviation can be seen as a neutral statistical quantifier, an instrument to exercise control and repression, or as a container that holds the departure from the norms we have come to accept as given. We look at what it means to belong and to deviate, to conjure fluctuations in what has been thought of as static, and chart paths of deviation and variance. Standard deviation describes how much things wobble away from the average.
