Every time we encounter a striking frame in a film, a beautifully crafted television series, or a documentary that deeply moves us, there is a common denominator at work — sometimes assertive and unmistakable, at other times subtle, almost invisible in its presence. That element is light: the cinematographer’s ultimate expressive tool.
Whether harsh or soft, diffused or directional, warm or cool, light has the power to transform the world around us and to imbue the image captured by the camera with that elusive magic which sets the art of cinema apart from mere visual recording.
In this masterclass, through the staging of an actual short-film screenplay, we will explore how to harness this inexhaustible source of inspiration to our advantage, shaping images with both natural and artificial light. At the same time, we will engage with the cutting edge of contemporary practice in the field through the use of modern lighting instruments and advanced lighting control techniques.
Day by day:
Day 1: Introduction to cinematography – light as a creative tool – a brief historical overview of different periods and the work of major Cinematographers – first hands-on experience with lighting equipment (“getting to know the tools”).
Day 2: Outdoor shooting – handling and making proper use of natural light depending on the time of day and weather conditions.
Day 3: Indoor shooting – creating different moods in interior spaces – problem solving and creative application – scene coverage with proper continuity (long shots, close-ups).
Bonus (if time allows): Show LUT – color management and film look design.
Participation requirements: Basic knowledge of photography and camera use (aperture, shutter speed, focal length, etc.) and a love for cinema!
