MARes in Hybrid Arts Thesis September 2026 week 1
The MARes in Hybrid Arts, Department of Audio & Visual Arts, Ionian University, announces the first week of public Master’s thesis presentations for September 2026, taking place online from 15 to 18 September 2026.
Across four consecutive days, MARes candidates will present research-creation projects that reflect the interdisciplinary and experimental scope of Hybrid Arts, bringing together artistic research, ecology, interspecies design, bio-based practices, critical cartography, computational processes, curatorial practice, degrowth, and slow media.
The presentations are open to the public and will take place online via Zoom.

The Amphibian Atlas: Ways of Knowing a River
Supervisor: Tania Tsiridou
Developed around the Biobío River basin in Chile, the project brings together geography, artistic research, critical cartography, illustration, field encounters, and editorial practice. At its centre is The Amphibian Atlas, an illustrated publication that creates encounters between ecological and scientific knowledge, territorial experience, community-based environmental monitoring, mapping, observation, drawing, and narrative.

LivArch: A Living Archive towards a Living Architecture: Developing an Interspecies Design Methodology with Apis Mellifera
Supervisor: Adam Zaretsky
The research develops LivArch as a Living Archive and interspecies design methodology, bringing together honeybee ethology, colony intelligence, ecological time, computational design, digital fabrication, artistic research, and cultural interpretation. Working with Apis mellifera as autonomous agents, the project proposes a shift from designing for other species toward designing with them.

Carrying the Residue: From Ancestral Gesture to the Biodigital – Bio-Material Translocation and Situated Biochemistry
Supervisor: Daphne Dragona
The thesis introduces Bio-Material Translocation as a framework for tracing how biological materials move across artistic making, biochemical processes, computational encoding, and public encounter. Moving from locally sourced pigments and ochre to DNA isolation, protein sequence data, drawing, sound, and audiovisual practice, the research develops the concepts of situated biochemistry, noisy thresholds, and soft delineations.

Applying Principles of Degrowth and Slow Media in Curatorial Practices
Supervisor: Daphne Dragona
Bringing together degrowth theory, slow media studies, critical perspectives on algorithmic insecurity, interviews with cultural practitioners, and the exhibition Art in the Park, the thesis examines how low-impact curatorial practices can respond to the accelerated pace, resource intensity, and pressures of constant visibility that shape contemporary art production. The research approaches slowness as a structural and collective question and explores curatorial care as a means of rethinking relationships to time, labour, resources, and the environment.
