About the Thesis
The research takes place at the intersection of ICT, urban ecology, and participation and investigates different perceptions of urban nature in the Amsterdam landscape. It considers an abstracted, algorithmic, digital data view and the local inhabitants’ personal views, in particular through their understandings of the value of trees. Using a feminist (data) approach the author unfolds a smart city app and digital twin Trees AI, considers inclusion, and treats the stories that people tell about the trees as equally important data. Mixing artistic interventions, stories, conventional measurements and unconventional use cases of the technology the research uncovers different truths. Can a feminist (data) hybrid art practice bring perspectives closer together, to provide better connection and care between people, technology and landscape, and propose careful and inclusive ways of working for the future?
About the Candidate
Sujata is a visual artist and practice-based researcher. Raised in the UK, of Indian heritage, and living in The Netherlands, she has a background in Physics, Photography and Information Technology. Her artistic endeavour emerges from a need to balance different cultural perspectives and explore their intersections.
