The Master of Research in Hybrid Arts (MARes) at the Department of Audio & Visual Arts of the Ionian University announces the first public release of Human Germline Gene Editing is Bioart: An Open Letter to Lulu and Nana by bioartist Adam Zaretsky, Visiting Professor in the MARes program published online on January 1, 2026, by the Bioart Ethical Advisory Kommission (BEAK) in Simplified Chinese, English and French..
Originally addressed to Lulu and Nana, the first known CRISPR-edited children, the essay is now published in Simplified Chinese, translated by Wun Ting Chan, alongside English and French versions. The French translation by Cherise Fong was published on Makery.info. The trilingual release aims to ensure accessibility across cultural contexts as the subjects come of age.
Zaretsky’s essay frames human germline gene editing as a form of bioart, examining its ethical and political implications while raising questions of consent, agency, and embodiment in experimental biotechnology.
First published in the Routledge Handbook of Art, Science, and Technology Studies (2021), the essay was released online on Jan. 1, 2026, by the Bioart Ethical Advisory Kommission (BEAK). The publication is supported by Hackteria, where a downloadable PDF is also available.
