The Department of Audio and Visual Arts at the Ionian University’s School of Music and Audiovisual Arts announces the Master of Arts by Research (MARes) in Hybrid Arts for the academic year 2025-2026.

This Master’s program is designed for independent research beyond taught content, preparing emerging researchers for professional work or for a PhD where theoretical research and experimentation at the frontier of science and emerging technologies support artistic practice.
Program Overview
The MARes program gathers research-driven minds under the academic umbrella of the Ionian University, regardless of their geographical location.
Key Features:
- Language: English
- Delivery Mode: Primarily online, with optional in-person Winter School (low residency model)
- Degree Awarded: Master of Arts by Research in Hybrid Arts
- Duration: One academic year (September 1, 2025 – August 31, 2026)
- Available Spots:12 postgraduate students
Upon completion, students will develop:
- Skills for creative and productive use of artistic and scientific knowledge
- Interdisciplinary collaboration in practice
- Expertise in research methodology for contemporary artistic and scientific inquiry
- Understanding of ethical and curatorial issues in Hybrid Arts
- Critical thinking in contemporary Hybrid Arts practices
Program Structure
The MARes consists of two (2) semesters:
- First Semester (Courses & Research Training)
- Second Semester (Master’s Thesis - Major Project)

Classes are conducted remotely via the Ionian University’s online learning platform, with a strong research component under faculty supervision. Students participate in:
- Online seminars
- Case study exercises & research workshops
- Guest lectures from international experts
An exception to remote learning is the Winter School, an intensive in-person research program held in November, where students present their thesis proposals and receive feedback from faculty and peers.
Application Submission
The MARes program accepts graduates from accredited institutions in Greece and abroad with an artistic background and a portfolio for evaluation.

- Alternative payment plans available: Students can opt for fewer installments to reduce bank transfer fees or request a more gradual plan with smaller installments.
Scholarships & Tuition Waivers
- Up to 15% of students may qualify for full tuition waivers based on academic excellence & financial need.
- Excellence scholarships awarded at the end of the first semester, covering the second-semester tuition based on academic performance.
- Scholarship recipients provide departmental support services as part of their award.

Additional Information
- Accepted students must submit original documents & two additional photographs upon registration.
- Students can participate in the Audiovisual Arts Festival (May) and collaborate with Departmental Artistic Labs.
