On Tuesday 25 January 2022, Dr. Emmanouel Rovithis is presenting the lecture with the title "Playful Mechanisms in Audio Spaceswithin the framework of Semiotic Analysis of New Media in the MA: Audiovisual Arts a course taught by Dr. Dalila Honorato and Dr. Tania Tsiridou.

This lecture focuses on audio-interactive game mechanics and their application in the fields of Education, Cultural Heritage, and Entertainment. Electronic audio games have primarily addressed the visually impaired community, but at times they have also met with commercial success in the general public, standing out as an exotic new medium based on a neglected perception channel. But what are the ways to translate the visual elements of a game into sound? How can one adjust a targeted curriculum onto audio-related tasks and riddles? We will discuss the nature of audio game design, setting off from early examples and arriving at research projects implemented by the Ionian University Department of Audio & Visual Arts.

Dr. Emmanouel Rovithis is specialized in the fields of Sound Synthesis, Audio Interaction, Game-Based Learning, and Instructional Design. Following the completion of his Ph.D., in which he implemented an electronic Role-Playing game on the subject matter of Sound Synthesis, he has been designing audio-based educational software, games, workshops and installations on behalf of prominent educational institutions including the Ionian University, the Friends of Music Society of the Athens Megaron Concert Hall, the Hellenic-American Educational Foundation (Athens College), and the Panhellenic Association of the Blind.
