Article 1: General Regulations
  1. The Department of Audio and Visual Arts sets up and runs the postgraduate studies programme (PSP) entitled ‘Audiovisual Arts in the Digital Age,' according to no. 2282/2018 decision of the University Senate (Government Gazette - FEK 2936/20.07.2018).
  2. The structure, organization, and operation of the programme are defined by the above-mentioned decision and governed by the rules and regulations of the relevant Acts and Ministerial decisions.
  3. The postgraduate studies programme will run for 8 consecutive academic years starting from the first year of its official operation. For the continuation of the programme beyond the above period, the provisions of the existing legislation shall apply.
  4. The provisions of the present regulation, as discussed below, specify the legislative framework governing postgraduate studies and regulate, in a uniform manner, the operational aspects of the programme in accordance with the current legislation.
Article 2: Scope, specializations, and awards
  1. The scope of the programme "Audiovisual Arts in the Digital Age" is the cultivation and specialization in the creative field of new forms of artistic expression using exclusively digital media (Digital Arts/Arts of New Media), as these are founded in the creative background of traditional forms of art (art, engraving, sculpture, as well as music/sound production), but are differentiated and developed mainly and exclusively with the integration of the ever-evolving digital interactive and audiovisual technology.
  2. The objective of the PSP is to promote scientific knowledge, research and artistic creation in the inter-disciplinary creative field of digital audiovisual art and communication/creative industry, utilizing the modern Interactive and audiovisual representation technologies, with emphasis on the application of the relevant scientific thinking, and the production of artistic work. The above features are offered primarily to artists who have already shown creative experience and artistic work using traditional expressive means, which are widely used in the field of fine arts, and who want to acquire expertise in the use of the new media offered by digital audiovisual technology and interaction technology, in order to further develop their artistic identity, so that a) it is either bounded in the form of autonomous artistic work, within the scope of the digital art (and in particular the art of sound, image or a multimedia combination) (b) or entails characteristics of activity in the fields of the creative economy as well as the audiovisual communication and industry.
  3. The PSP awards Postgraduate Studies Diplomas (PSD) entitled ‘Audiovisual Arts in the Digital Age.' The type of awarded diploma is defined in Annex A of the present regulation.

Article 5: Extension of studies
  1. At the beginning of the fourth semester of his/her studies, the student must explain in writing to the C.C the reasons for exceeding the time limits, and request an extension of the duration of his/her studies, which may not exceed a total of four (4) teaching semesters. Then the C.C is asked to examine the reasons for the extension and the overall progress of the student and decide whether to prolong the duration of the postgraduate student's studies or terminate the student from the programme.
  2. In the event that the postgraduate programme is not offered again in the future for any reason, then any student who has not completed his/her studies, even if he/she has received an extension of studies, will not be able to graduate from the postgraduate programme
  3. Conventionally, the date of the commencement of studies is the last day of registration in the postgraduate programme of the 1st academic semester, while the final date of the study is considered the last day of the last compulsory academic semester. 4. The suspension of studies period does not count towards a student’s regular registration period.
  5. In the event that the postgraduate programme is not offered again in the future for any reason, then any student who has not completed his/her studies, even if he/she has received an extension of studies, will not be able to graduate from the postgraduate programme.
Article 7: Structure, academic modules and student credit points
  1. The Postgraduate programme "Audiovisual Arts in the Digital Age" is research-oriented and this is reflected in both its overall structure and the way its content is developed in each educational unit. Specifically, the curriculum of the postgraduate programme is structured in three semesters and includes during the first two semesters attending a set of modules and in the third semester preparing the dissertation. The attendance of study-units (modules) involves a combination of theoretical presentation of concepts and guided research/artistic work in the form of individual or group work of the postgraduate students. In the third semester, the supervised individual research/artistic work is completed with the writing and presentation of the dissertation. The detailed structure of the curriculum of the postgraduate programme is defined in the founding law (Government Gazette-FEK 2936/20.07.2018) and is set out in Annex B in the present regulations document.

  4. The study-units (modules) have to be attended in person at the premises of the Department of Audio and Visual arts. An exception to the above may be the implementation of a part of the distance learning modules (up to the limit set by the current legislation) and part of the seminars, according to the needs of the postgraduate students. In the above cases, a modern remote-education platform can be utilized. In any case, all postgraduate students are obligated to attend in person the activities of the programme in the following cases:
    a) During the first semester of the teaching of study-units (modules) (for 3 days), where they will attend the first courses and meet the teachers.
    b) In the second semester (3-6 days towards the end of May), where they will attend the progress of the doctoral research of the Department and the Festival of the department, which includes an international scientific conference
  5. Modification of the curriculum and redistribution of the study-units ( modules) between the semesters can be done after the C.C submits of a well-justified proposal to the Assembly of the Department and receives a relevant decision stating its consent.
Article 8: Academic staff
  1. The teaching of the study-units (modules), as well as the conduct of seminars, shall be entrusted by decision of the Assembly of the Department following a recommendation from the C.C of the postgraduate programme. The Department of Audio and Visual Arts has the necessary human scientific resources, teaching and research staff, laboratory teaching staff, special education staff, and special technical laboratory staff all of high scientific, artistic and educational level, for the staffing of the postgraduate programme. 6. To ensure a high-quality level of studies, the maximum number of postgraduate students per supervisor is set to six (6).
Article 9: Vacancies announcement and admission requirements
  1. During the spring semester of each year, the Department Assembly, following a justified recommendation from the C.C, determines the number of students who can be admitted to the postgraduate programme during the following academic year and makes an invitation for expression of interest, with a maximum of thirty five (35) vacancies (students) per year. The notice of invitation is published by any appropriate means in newspapers of wide circulation, on the bulletin boards of the department, and electronically.
  2. In detail, the above-mentioned notice refers to:
    • The number of postgraduate students who will join the programme.

Candidates may be requested by the Assembly to provide additional support documents or data, which are explicitly mentioned in the announcement.
Article 10: Candidate selection procedure
The selection of candidates follows the procedures described below:
  1. The Assembly appoints the Evaluation and Support Committee of Candidates (E.S.C.) of the postgraduate programme. The E.S.C. is composed of academic, research and special education members of the Department of Audio and Visual Arts. The members of the Evaluation and Support Committee are responsible for the conduct of personal interviews and the overall evaluation of candidates who have submitted a request for participating in the programme. The Assembly, additionally, appoints the chairperson of the Evaluation and Support Committee.
  2. The Assembly also appoints examiners for the study-units (modules) to be examined should it be decided to carry out such examinations
  3. The Registrar of the postgraduate programme receives the registrations and the necessary supporting documents submitted by the candidates, within the deadline specified in the notice. The documents submitted by the candidates must be complete. Any supporting documents not submitted along with the registration (diplomas, etc.) must be described in detail in a solemn declaration by the applicant, with the commitment that they will be produced when requested. These supporting documents will only be taken into account if produced until the date specified by the E.S.C. The Registrar of the programme verifies the validity and completeness of each candidate's supporting documents, draws up a detailed list of the Postgraduate candidates and forwards it to the E.S.C.
  4. The E.S.C., on receiving the list of candidates from the registrar of the programme, is responsible for their assessment, in accordance with the criteria laid down in article 11 of this Regulation. In the first phase of the evaluation, it checks whether candidates meet the basic requirements for admission (article 9 para 3). If a candidate does not meet the basic requirements, he or she is not evaluated further and is excluded from the procedure. The E.S.C. then grades and ranks the candidates, based on the score they have accumulated, and draws up a candidate merit list. The merit list includes all candidates with their detailed scores in the individual criteria and their final score, arranged in order of success. The E.S.C, after taking into account the number of vacancies that have been announced, draws up the list of successful candidates and runners-up and recommends their choice to the Assembly. The list of successful candidates and runners-up includes only the final score for each candidate and is ranked in order of merit. The list above is forwarded to the Assembly for approval.
  5. The Assembly of the Department validates the list. In case of a tie, priority is given to the candidate with the highest grade in his basic course (or in the course with the highest grade, if they have more than one). In exceptional cases, the Assembly may decide to consider successful applicants candidates who tied with the last successful candidate in the list.
  6. The list of successful candidates and runners-up is validated by the Assembly and then posted on the bulletin boards of the Department and in electronic form on the website of the Department and the programme. The successful candidates are notified to enroll in the programme at a time determined by the Assembly. A candidate, who will not enroll within the specified period of time, loses the right to enroll in the programme unless he or she appeals to the Assembly and put forth reasons beyond the candidate's control or serious illness. In this case, the Convention shall examine the reasons put forth by the applicant and shall decide on the matter.
  7. The registrar of the programme has at his or her disposal the list of the candidates for the programme and provides them with information on their performance. Any objections to the list can be made within ten (10) days from the date of the announcement of the list. In the notice of objection, the candidate must put forth specific reasons, which are assessed by the Assembly and a final decision is made within the next two (2) weeks from its submission, following a relevant recommendation of E. S. C.
Article 11: Candidate selection criteria
  1. The application of the selection criteria, as defined in this article, is carried out by the E.S.C., which is responsible for the organization and smooth conduct of the evaluation and ensures its compliance with the provisions of the applicable legislation and this regulation throughout the evaluation process. Each candidate is credited with a specific number of merit units or points (M.P). The merit units or points credited to each candidate from the individual categories are summed up and constitute the total of the candidate's merit units. The total score of each candidate is expressed on a scale of 0 to 100 (M.P). For the crediting of merit points to a candidate, the following sub-categories of criteria are taken into account, each corresponding to a specific number of points (M.P).
    • The formal qualifications of the candidates(30 M.P)
    • The scientific/artistic qualifications of the candidates(30 M.P)
    • The results of the written examinations provided that they are carried out(15 M.P)
    • The purpose statement and the performance of the candidates during the oral interview(25 M.P)
  2. The method of evaluation for each of the individual categories of criteria is as follows:

    • i)The formal qualifications of the candidates, as derived from the supporting documents submitted to the registrar of the postgraduate programme, are recorded in detail in the candidate list and based on them, candidates can be granted a maximum of thirty (30) merit points as follows:
      • Professional work is credited with up to ten (10) merit points as follows: two (2) merit points, per certified year of professional experience in a subject relevant to the programme.
      • Additional diplomas (degrees other than the first or postgraduate titles) are credited with up to seven(7) M.P as follows: Three (3) M.P for a postgraduate diploma of 2nd or 3rd cycle, two (2) M.P for a second diploma and one (1) M.P. for any other title beyond the second up to seven (7) M.P in total. It should be noted that the diplomas of foreign universities are taken into consideration only if they are recognized by the National Academic Recognition Information Center (N. A. R. I. C) as equivalent to the diplomas awarded by the Greek Higher Education Institutions.
      • The knowledge of foreign languages beyond the obligatory first one is credited with up to three (3) M.P as follows: A candidate who is sufficiently competent in other foreign languages besides the required one is credited with one (1) M.P for each additional language.
      • Any other thesis or diploma deemed substantial and equivalent, at the discretion of the Committee, is credited with up to five (5) M.P, depending on its relevance to the discipline of the postgraduate programme.
      • The diploma can receive up to five (5) M.P, as follows: Two (2) M.P if the diploma grade ranges from seven and a half (7.5) to eight and a half (8.5) and three (3) M.P, if it is higher than eight and a half (8.5).
    • ii) The candidates ' scientific/artistic qualifications are credited with a maximum of thirty (30) M.P as follows:
      • The research-scientific work of a candidate can be credited with up to ten (10) M.P, in total following a documented assessment of the E. S. C
      • Any published works by the candidate (publications, reviews, etc.) or significant awards received (e.g., scholarships, awards, etc.) can be credited with up to ten (10) M.P
      • Any official artistic work of the candidate (e.g., participation in exhibitions, festivals, etc.) can be credited with up to ten (10) M.P
    • iii) The results of the written examinations are credited with a maximum of fifteen (15) M.P.The final score is the average of the score in all the courses considered (as of 0-10), as described in the notice. The total of the credited merit points is equal to the final score multiplied by a factor score of 1,5.
    • iv) The purpose statement can be granted a maximum of ten (10) M.P on the basis of the adequacy of the documentation for the candidate’s selection of the postgraduate programme, as well as their expectations from this choice.
    • v) The oral interview covers topics of broader academic, scientific and social interest, is credited with a maximum of fifteen (15) M.P and aims to help (a) the evaluation of candidates in aspects not apparent in the supporting documents they have submitted to the Department, b) The evaluation of other aspects of the candidates, which cannot be evaluated in the previous proceedings and the personal interview concerning the Declaration of Purpose, (c) The verification of the general scientific knowledge and artistic commitment of the candidate and the establishment of the candidate’s personality profile . The members of E.S.C. evaluate each candidate individually and grade them with a specific number of units (from 1 to 15). The ratings of the Committee members are equal in value in the establishment of the final score, which emerges as the average of the individual scores credited by the members of the E.S.C. If a candidate is rated in the interview with less than 7 M.P, then the candidate is excluded from the selection procedure. In case no interview takes places, the statement of purpose is granted a maximum of twenty-five (25) M.P.
  3. For the formation of the final sum of merit points per candidate, in the event that no written exams are scheduled, the sum of M.P deriving from the criteria categories (i), (ii) and (iv) is multiplied by an appropriate factor, so that it is scored on a scale from 0 to 100.
Article 12: Eligibility for written exams
  1. Where a decision of the Assembly provides for a written examination of the candidates, the syllabus material for each study-unit (module) is determined by the Assembly following a recommendation from the faculty, special education and laboratory teaching staff appointed by the director responsible for the programme. The dates of the written examinations, the subjects and the syllabus for each of the subjects are included in the announcement of the vacancies for the postgraduate programme.
  2. The Assembly, on recommendation of the C.C, designates, for each of the study-units (modules) considered, a member of the faculty, special education or laboratory teaching staff which is of the same or relative discipline. The examiners of the courses are responsible for choosing the exam material and scoring the written essays of the candidates.
Article13: Announcement of successful applicants
The final evaluation lists of the prospective postgraduate candidates include the total sum of the candidates’ M.P and are submitted to the C.C by E.S.C. The C.C, in turn, prepares a relevant recommendation to the Assembly, which validates the list of successful candidates and runners-up. The final lists of the successful applicants are announced in printed and electronic form by all appropriate means.
Article 14: Attendance, tuition and exams
  1. At the beginning of each academic semester and within a period of time announced by the Registrar of the postgraduate programme, each graduate student is enrolled in the programme and states the study-units (modules) that he or she wishes to attend.
  2. The teaching aspect of the programme involves the attendance of study-units (modules). In particular, the educational work per study-unit is implemented in the form of teaching (courses, seminars, workshops) as well as preparing research work (individual or group, under systematic supervision). The underlying purpose of these tasks is to provide, in terms of academic quality, a programme of postgraduate studies oriented towards a robustly founded creative practice. Typical topics may include literature reviews but they are mainly of educational and research purpose such as the development of an autonomous experimental small-scale artistic project, the realization of an interactive installation or live demo/concert or exhibition, the implementation of a production process of audiovisual material, etc. in any case, due to the applied/creative nature of the programme, the above tasks correspond to a minimum of 50% of the total teaching work of each study- unit.
  3. Each graduate student has the minimum obligation to attend 80% of the teaching hours (courses, seminars, workshops) that are defined per study-unit. Failure to fulfill this criterion makes it impossible for the student to participate in any examination procedure for this study-unit (module) and results in referring the study-unit (module) to the following academic year.
  4. In any case, the Assembly may assign specific additional activities to the postgraduate programme which the students are required to participate in, following a recommendation from the C.C. These activities are announced at the beginning of the respective academic semester together with the curriculum.
  5. The curriculum is published annually under the responsibility of C.C in collaboration with the instructors of the postgraduate programme and is approved by the Assembly. It includes all the details of the implementation of teaching per study-unit (module), as well as any additional activities mentioned in the previous paragraph.
  6. The examination of each study-unit (module) can be done orally, in writing, through assignments or in any other way that is determined and announced at the beginning of the semester by the instructor. All obligations arising from the attendance of the study-units(modules), such as doing and handing in exercises or assignments, must be fully completed within the duration of the semester (and by the end of the exam period). Examination of each study-unit (module) can be performed only once, during the examination period of the semester in question. Students’ scores in the study-units (modules) are announced no later than two weeks after the end of the relevant examination period.
  7. In exceptional cases, the Assembly, following a recommendation from the C.C, may modify, or reassign the time of the examinations, or designate an additional examination period or a different test method, for some or for all of the study-units(modules), depending on special circumstances and the needs of the postgraduate students, during the examination period of September.
  8. Each postgraduate student has the opportunity to be examined twice in each study-unit (module) during the 1st academic year (at the end of the respective academic semester and in a repeat attempt in September, if it is specified). If the student fails the second time, the graduate student may, at his request, be referred to the Assembly, which decides either to grant an additional examination by a three-member committee consisting of members of the faculty for reasons considered valid and justify the student’s unsatisfactory performance, re-join the study-unit in the next semester (without paying additional registration fees), or be required that he or she withdraws permanently from the postgraduate programme.
  9. In exceptional cases and for very serious reasons, the Assembly of the Department and on the recommendation of C.C may decide to require that the postgraduate student withdraws from the programme. Such reasons can be insufficient progress (e.g., non-participation in the educational/testing process), systematic inadequate fulfillment of obligations and disrespectful or unethical behavior, including plagiarism.
  10. In the event that a postgraduate student decides to terminate his studies, he is obliged to inform the Director of the programme in writing.
Article 15: Postgraduate Dissertations
  1. After the candidate postgraduate student submits his or her application form where he or she mentions the desired discipline and the academic supervisor of his or her Postgraduate dissertation, which includes a summary of the proposed work, the C.C makes the necessary recommendations to the Assembly which appoints the candidate’s academic supervisor. The above application form is submitted on completion of the 2nd semester, and the appointment of the supervisor must be made no later than the beginning of the 3rd semester of the postgraduate student’s enrolment (with the exception specified in the next paragraph). If there is no application by the postgraduate student to C.C, then the C.C of has the right to, on its own initiative, recommend that the Assembly appoints an academic supervisor. It is possible to arrange for a candidate to be assigned the drawing up of his or her dissertation during the 2nd semester, as long as the student has successfully attended all the study-units (modules) of the 1st semester of Studies.
  2. Students who have failed in more than six (6) study-units (modules) of the programme cannot submit an application for drawing up a postgraduate dissertation. In this case, the procedure referred to in paragraph 1 of this article shall apply in the following academic year.
  3. The academic supervisor of the dissertation is a lecturer in PSP and must have research interests related to the discipline in question. He or she is responsible for the supervision and guidance of the postgraduate students work, constantly monitoring the course of their work and supporting their research effort by suggesting specific research directions. Postgraduate students are obligated to , without fail, inform their supervisor of the progress of their work.
  4. The Postgraduate dissertation is evaluated by an examination committee appointed on decision of the Assembly and in consultation with the academic supervisor, stating the final topic of the postgraduate dissertation. On completion of the public presentation of the postgraduate dissertation, the Examination Committee evaluates and grades it.
  6. If the postgraduate dissertation is approved, but relevant comments and suggestions for correction have been made, the graduate student is obligated to take them into account and make the necessary modifications and improvements within the time indicated and submit its final form to the supervisor.
