Cinematic Tourism and Perception Shaping through Pop Culture
Date and Time: 30/05/2024 (09:00-11:30 EEST)
Location: Corfu Central Public Historical Library: room "Evi Laskari"

How did New Zealand transform from a farm at the edge of the planet into the most sought-after tourist destination worldwide? How did a small remote beach in Thailand start attracting more visitors than the famous South Beach in Miami? How did Americans suddenly start talking about Kefalonia?

How does cinema shape perceptions of cities, islands, and countries, of places that exist on Earth but also in our imagination? What is the power of the images and narratives produced by pop culture and how can they influence the way we travel and interact with landscapes, cultures, and people?

This talk will present the phenomenon termed by some theorists as "cinematic tourism" and will explain how pop culture influences tourism and tourist development, the flows of people, our journeys, and the places we love.
