The main aim of the research is to integrate digital and analogical tools in order to create drawings by using outside forces, elaborate systems and human based autonomous devices and to distinguish new designing tools and design processes. An investigation of the relationship between nature and human perception.
With an interest in process rather than form, and with intention to follow and visually record the trajectory of natural forces, devices were created that are mapping and tracing random movement or record events. Ancient devices have been studied as a way to reinvent and adapt mechanisms and explore the physical computing and the thinking through physical models.
The harmonograph, designed like a board game, produces drawings due to the rotation of circles with different radius and the intersection of the tangent lines. The device is trying to parametrize different aspects like velocity, radius etc.
The anemograph uses the forces of the wind, moves according to the direction and velocity, causing a mark to be rendered. The aspect of time plays an important role in the process of the emerging traces.
Those drawing machines designed and materialized in order to find, to describe and to engage into the process of design. Design is made by defining instructions rather than by top down actions.Τhe limits between the relationship of user-device are being blurred.
The kinetic drawings as an exploratory tool for the user, describe but also represent the eventual structure system and engage the users in a process of exploration and interaction with the structure, giving the possibility to be seen as an artistic object and to consider the aesthetic side of it.
The process of recording information during a period of time transfers cognitive material, records desires and captures the appropriate conditions of a possible version. transcripts from analog to digital or vice versa, affect in a different way the perceptual sensations of the user and sometimes sharpen the tactile, sometimes the vision, or the hearing.
In addition, animated images have been designed through algorithms in order to reinterpret and comprehend natural elements. The movement, the time, the direction, the sequence, the repeatability, the superposition and others, are taking shape and being studied through a geometrical kinetic representation. A representation of flow, as the continuous output of numbers of the script. The algorithm interprets nature and vice versa.
Animated images are a tool of exploration through the way of representation
The research attempts to implement the new abilities emerged from the new technologies, to syntax a new vocabulary of the designing process and to translate the drawings into other forms of outcome.
